National Employee Appreciation Day: One of the primary goals for internal communicators in 2024 (based on our recent internal comms trends survey) is engaging employees and creating a better workplace. We know it’s critical to recognize your employee’s efforts all year long, but going above and beyond on National Employee Appreciation Day will go a long way for your team, creating engaged employees and a healthy workplace.
Here are 10 ideas to show appreciation to your employees on National Employee Appreciation Day:
1.) A personalized note (or phone call) from the CEO
2.) Host a team happy hour
3.) Offer a surprise day off, an extended weekend, or long lunch break
4.) Host an awards ceremony (think: your own personal Dundie awards!)
5.) Offer free professional development or training
6.) Hold a giveaway or raffle with prizes (company swag, extra vacation day, gift certificates, etc.)
7.) Treat your employees to a meal
8.) Launch an employee recognition program (i.e. employee recognition wall of fame, employee of the month, shoutouts from leadership on social media, company website, or intranet)

Rally for a cause or awareness campaign: March is stacked with important awareness holidays and observances (see above), and there are plenty of opportunities for your team to get involved and participate in meaningful ways.
For example:
- Consider having the team volunteer, donate blood, or participate in a group safety training for Red Cross Month
- Share relevant resources and educational materials with employees for Brain Injury Awareness Month, National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, or Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month
- March is Women’s History Month, and it’s an excellent opportunity to recognize the contributions of women on your team! Consider hosting guest speakers or offering professional development training. Find local events and celebrations for Women’s History Month that your company can attend. Note: When planning initiatives and celebrations this month, it’s important to ensure that we approach this celebration with intersectionality in mind by considering the unique experiences and challenges faced by different groups of women, including those from diverse cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds and gender identities.
Review Q1 goals and objectives: For many companies, March marks the end of the first quarter. What better time to take stock of your progress with your employees!? Celebrate the success of the goals and metrics you hit in Q1 with your team, and communicate an action plan for Q2 for the areas you fell short.
March Madness Tournament
March Madness is the NCAA Division men’s single-elimination basketball tournament of 68 teams that compete in seven rounds for the national championship. If you and your team want to join in on the fun and festivities, create a March Madness pool for your company! Here are a few tips to get you started.
- Determine who wants to participate and determine the prize for the winner. You could have the tournament be a $5 or $10 entry fee, or the prize could be company swag, an outlandish trophy, a gift certificate, or an extra PTO day. Additionally, you could just play for the glory of winning; no prize needed!
- Distribute brackets. These can be printed out, or you can sign up online (NCAA offers an online bracket challenge).
- Now it’s time to start predicting! Have participants fill out their brackets by picking who they think the winner of each game will be all the way to the very last round.
- Next, identify a scoring system. This article offers a variety of ways to score your March Madness bracket.
- Select someone to be the keeper of the brackets! This person will determine who is in for the next round and who is booted out! If you are playing online, it will keep score for you.
- Lastly, celebrate the winner!
