February may be the shortest month of the year, but it’s packed with important holidays, observances, and events that can spruce up any February employee newsletter! But don’t worry, you won’t have to spend hours searching through calendars and websites to find them. Here are a few additional ideas for your February newsletter:

Black History Month: When planning content and initiatives for Black History Month, it’s important that it’s not performative with empty messaging. There is always an opportunity for growth and improvement, and that begins with listening! This Adweek article offers insightful and thoughtful perspectives so your initiatives can be followed up with proactive steps that actively and consistently address systemic inequality gaps over time (not just in February).

    • Do invest / Don’t oversee and ‘empower’
    • Do be of service / Don’t be self-serving
    • Do recognize / Don’t tokenize
    • Do launch new initiatives / Don’t stop in February

Super Bowl LVIII: Whether you are tuning in for the game itself, the incredible (and most creative) ads, or the always entertaining halftime performance, it’s no surprise that the Super Bowl is one of the most watched broadcasts of all time! So why not use this highly anticipated television event as an employee engagement tool?! Include a quick survey for employees to submit their pick for the title this year! (Surveys can be embedded into emails with an employee communications tool like Workshop.) Employees who correctly guess the winning team will win a prize (lunch on the company, a coffee gift certificate, etc.)

Celebrations, launches, team accomplishments: It is always a great idea (and important) to include the most recent launches and team accomplishments in your internal communications so that your team can be well informed!  Bonus tip: Use multiple reminders to help boost engagement. Meet your employees where they are and send updates to multiple channels (like Slack, Microsoft Teams, Sharepoint, and more) from a single platform like Workshop.

Staff picks for books, podcasts, and movies: Have your employees share the latest podcast they are listening to or book they are reading! Once you have gathered all the staff picks, highlight them in your next employee newsletter. Bonus tip: Get social! Create a company hashtag for entertainment recommendations. Encourage employees to use it on social media so you can own the tag! When your team searches the hashtag, they will find loads of recommendations for books, podcasts, movies, and more.

Employee spotlight: Many companies these days operate in a hybrid or work-from-home model. With a remote team, it’s important to keep your employees engaged and connected to each other. One way to achieve this is to hold an employee spotlight in your employee newsletter each month in the form of a written interview, video, or short Q&A text alongside their photo. Include examples of the excellent work they do for the company, and a couple of personal interests too!

Team building activities: An easy and fun way to spruce up your internal newsletters is to include a simple team building activity. You could include a work bingo card, water cooler trivia, or offer a virtual break room!
