Internal Comms Survey Template

The first step of auditing and assessing your internal communications is to survey your employees and find out what is and isn't working with your existing channels. It is a great place to start whether you've had a formal strategy in place all along or are putting together an internal comms plan for the first time.

How to use this internal communications survey template

The first step of auditing and assessing your internal communications is to survey your employees and find out what is and isn’t working with your existing channels. Even if you haven’t been executing on a formal plan, your internal communications have naturally developed in the channels your employees have available to them. Before you tear it all down and build it from scratch, this survey will help you get a sense of the culture that has already been built around internal communications, and see what is or isn’t working. We recommend sending out this survey every 6-12 months and all answers should be completely anonymous.

What you'll find in this internal communications survey template (and quick tips!)

This internal communications survey is designed to be completed in 15 minutes. It contains about 15 scaled agreement questions (on a scale of 1-5, how would you agree with the following statement) and a small selection of free-response questions, which will help you to both (1) quickly capture data across the organization and (2) deep dive into specific issues or great examples of internal communication.

You can customize each section to include the channels you use and the departments your company is made up of.

This survey covers a pretty big range of internal communications, including what comes from leadership, other departments, and even peer-to-peer. It will give you a solid picture of how information flows throughout your company, and help you to block and tackle any specific issues before building your next internal communications plan and strategy.

Here is a small sample of the questions included:

  • How happy are you with the overall internal communication you currently receive?
  • Please rate your level of satisfaction with our existing internal communication channels.
  • Please rate your level of satisfaction with the communication from the following departments/teams/individuals.
  • What information do you wish you had more of?
  • What information do you wish you had less of?
  • What other suggestions do you have about improving our communication strategy going forward?
