Internal Communication

How to celebrate National Internal Comms Day

How to celebrate National Internal Comms Day

If you work in internal communications, this will probably feel familiar: You spend weeks planning a big announcement, you help leaders say the right thing, at the right time, and you make sure employees actually understand what’s happening (and why it matters!).

The launch goes well, people are aligned, things move forward! And before you know it… you’re already onto the next thing. No big moment, no spotlight. Just a quiet “okay, that worked” — and a full calendar ahead of you.

We hear this all the time! It’s no secret that internal communicators are some of the most impactful people in an organization… but they’re also some of the most overlooked.

So we thought: what if that changed, even just for a day? That’s why we’re introducing National Internal Comms Day, happening April 23, 2026!

What is National Internal Comms Day?

National Internal Comms Day is a new annual moment to recognize the people who keep organizations connected, informed, and moving in the same direction.

It’s intentionally simple:

  • A day to celebrate internal communicators
  • A moment to share your story and impact
  • A chance for organizations to commit to one improvement in how they communicate

And yes — it’s also about giving internal communicators their flowers. The idea is about visibility, making sure this work is seen, appreciated, and talked about.

Why this day matters

We know — adding another “day” to the calendar can feel a little… extra. But this one exists for a reason! Internal communications sits in a unique spot. When it’s working well, everything feels smoother:

  • People understand priorities
  • Leaders communicate clearly
  • Teams feel connected to the bigger picture

When it’s not working, you feel it everywhere. And yet, the role itself often stays in the background. The 2026 Internal Comms Trends Report puts it plainly: internal communicators are becoming more strategic, but expectations are still outpacing resources.

In other words:

  • There’s more demand for great communication
  • More complexity to manage
  • And not always more support to match

That’s a tough place to be — and it’s exactly why recognition matters! Not as a “nice to have,” but as a way to reinforce the value of this work.

The work you do (that people don’t always see)

Internal comms is often called “behind the scenes,” but that doesn’t quite capture it. You’re behind the scenes, shaping how everything shows up. Think about moments like a new hire’s first day feeling thoughtful and welcoming, a company change landing clearly instead of causing confusion, or a tough message being delivered with the right tone and timing.

Those moments don’t just happen! They’re the result of someone thinking carefully about audience, channels, timing, tone, and clarity — all at once! And even the tools that seem simple (like email) take real strategy to get right.

A quick note for leaders

If you lead a team of communicators, this day is just as much for you. Internal comms works best when it’s supported (not just expected). Here are three simple ways to show up:

1. Be specific with recognition

Instead of just a simple “Hey, thanks!” try:

  • “Your work helped us navigate that change smoothly.”
  • “Because of your messaging, people really understood the why.”

2. Bring comms in earlier

One of the most common challenges we hear? Being looped in too late. If you want better outcomes, involve communicators at the beginning.

3. Invest in clarity, not just output

More messages don’t fix communication. Clear systems do:

  • Defined channels
  • Better tools
  • Time to plan

A small moment that can grow

We don’t expect one day to change everything, but we do believe small moments matter. National Internal Comms Day is a day where Internal communicators feel seen, organizations pause and reflect, and the profession gets a little more visibility. That’s a good place to start!

How to celebrate

Mark your calendar: April 23

Celebrate what you do. Share your story. And don’t be shy about accepting your flowers — you’ve earned them!
