Employee engagement survey templates to enhance your internal communications strategy

Internal communicators are no strangers to wearing multiple hats and one of the most impactful roles we get to play is listener. Whether creating your very first internal communications strategy, launching a new company-wide initiative, or just trying to understand what’s resonating (and what’s not), surveys can give you the real-time feedback you need to take meaningful action.
And it’s not just a gut feeling! 63.7% of internal communications professionals now use surveys to shape their strategies, up from 56.5% the year before (check out the 2025 Internal Communications Trends Report).
As Workshop’s Internal Comms Manager, I’ve used these survey templates to guide everything from company-wide messaging to small-but-mighty updates. They’ve helped me find communication gaps, and they’ve been key in helping leadership teams understand what our employees value most. If you’re ready to build a stronger, more responsive comms strategy, these four templates are a great place to start.
Employee Engagement Survey Template
This is my go-to template for getting a big-picture look at how employees are feeling—about their work, their team, and the company as a whole. It goes deeper than “Are you happy here?” and gets at the core of engagement: Do people feel connected to their work? Do they feel supported by leadership? Are they proud to be here?

Whether you have a well-established employee engagement strategy or are just getting started, this survey will help you set a clear benchmark for employee sentiment.

When I first ran this survey, I learned that while people felt positive about our culture, there were a few areas where clarity was lacking, especially around career growth. That feedback helped shape a new series of manager comms and an increased focus on professional development at our all-company retreats (called Workshop Week!). Without asking, I wouldn’t have known.
Pro tip: Pair this survey with a quarterly cadence so you can track changes over time and celebrate progress. Even a few percentage points of movement can reveal big wins or signal the need to dig deeper.
Internal Comms Survey Template
This one’s a personal favorite because it directly helps me improve my own work. We all wonder, “Is this message landing? Are we using the right channels? Is the tone resonating?” This survey gives you all those answers and more.
After sending a few big updates through multiple platforms (Slack, email, all-hands), I used this survey to find out what our employees actually paid attention to. Turns out, some teams preferred a Slack recap over email, and others wanted more visuals to break up dense information. That insight helped me rethink how and where we communicate major initiatives
Remember, don’t just ask what’s not working—also ask what people love. That gives you a foundation to build on and keeps the survey tone positive and solutions-focused.
Company Event Feedback Survey
It’s no question that events, whether internal or external, take a lot of time, energy, and budget…so it’s important to know if they’re resonating. Whether it’s a town hall, company offsite, or even a new team-building initiative, we always follow up with this template. It captures the full picture: what worked, what could improve, and what people want to see more of.
After one of our all-hands meetings, we learned that employees appreciated the transparency in leadership updates, but wanted more Q&A time with executives. So we added a pre-submission option and carved out more time in the agenda. Small change, big impact.
After your next event, try sending your event feedback survey within 24 hours of the event while the experience is still fresh. Bonus points if you include a few open-ended questions—they often reveal the best insights!
Employee Pulse Survey Template
Think of this one as your regular check-in. It’s lightweight, fast to complete, and great for spotting trends before they turn into internal issues. I’ve used it after employee transitions, product launches, and even during busy seasons when stress levels tend to spike.
What I love most? It creates a rhythm of listening. When employees see that you’re consistently asking for input—and following up on it—it builds trust. It says, “Hey, your voice matters here.” And honestly, it’s one of the easiest ways to show that your internal comms strategy is responsive, not reactive.
Try this: Pick one or two core questions to repeat each time you send the pulse survey. That consistency makes it easier to measure shifts in morale or engagement over time.
Start listening and start leading
Surveys aren’t just a checkbox, they’re an essential part of building an internal communications strategy that actually works. They help you listen with intention, respond with empathy, and continuously improve how you support your employees.
With the right tools and templates, gathering feedback doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be something you build into your everyday rhythm—and it’s one of the best ways to show your employees that their voices truly matter.
